Thief River Falls - Millard A. Nelson, 88, died on Monday, September 15, 2003 at the Oakland Park Nursing Home in Thief River Falls.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 19 at the Abundant Life Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls with the Rev. Wesley Langaas officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 18 with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Johnson-Green Funeral Home in Thief River Falls. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Millard Artel Nelson was born on June 10, 1915 in Thief River Falls, the son of John E. and Thora (Hofto) Nelson. He grew up and attended school in Thief River Falls.

On July 23, 1938 he married Helga O. Groven in Oklee. He worked for Carl Wennberg Welding as a young man. He taught a general metalwork class in a national defense training program from 1941 to 1942. He started working for the Soo Line Railroad as a clerk in 1942 and retired in 1975, after 33 years.

Millard was a member of the Abundant Life Lutheran Church, Odd Fellows, United Commercial Travelers, Brotherhood of Railway Clerks, Soo Line Veterans and Soo Line Historical Society. As a member of the Odd Fellows Young Pine Lodge in Thief River Falls, he held all offices in the branches of the local order, serving as secretary for many years. He also served as secretary for the UCT, Pennington County Historical Society and the Union Lake Sarah Association. He was especially happy spending time with his family and friends at their cottage at Union Lake.

Survivors include his wife, Helga of Thief River Falls; sons, Stuart (Karen) of Anoka, Bruce (Kay) of Thief River Falls, Gary (Lynnea) of Clear Lake and Jack (Jean) of Thief River Falls; daughter, Jill (Joseph) Wetzstein of Dickinson, N.D.; sister, Penny (Trig) Johnson of Tucson, Ariz.; and 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Millard was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Truman and Herald; and sister, Rena.
