Luther Nelson, 78

McVille, N.D. - Luther G. Nelson, 78, of McVille, N.D. and formerly of Newfolden died Monday, October 27, 2003 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, N.D. Funeral services were held on Oct. 30, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. in the McVille Lutheran Church. Interment was at the McVille cemetery.

Luther was born May 28, 1925 in rural Newfolden, the son of Tollef and Othelia (Petterson) Nelson. He grew up in rural Newfolden and attended the public school in Newfolden. During his teen years he worked for a local farmer. When he reached his 18th birthday, he moved to Buffalo, N.Y. where for five years he worked in a flour mill. He was drafted into the United States Army and fought in the Korean War. After he was honorably discharged from the army he farmed for three years. On June 26, 1954 he married Marlene Holst in Holt. They resided in Warren, where Luther began working for the Peavey Company Grain Elevator of Warren. In 1961 the couple moved to McVille where Luther managed the Peavey Grain Elevator until his retirement in 1989. During his life in McVille, Luther was a member of the Ole Semling American Legion Post # 135 of McVille and the McVille Lutheran Church. He served on the Church Council, Building Committee, City Council, Boy Scout Board of Directors and Commercial Club. In 2000 he was awarded for his 50th year as a member of the American Legion.

Luther enjoyed attending auction sales. He was always shopping for a bargain and woodworking. He made several wood projects that will carry his memory.

Luther is survived by his wife Marlene of McVille; a son David (Polly) of Bismarck, N.D.; a daughter Diane (Dennis) Montplaisir of Buffalo, six grandchildren; one brother, Marvin Nelson of Thief River Falls; one sister, Betty Swan of Newfolden, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Orville and Palmer, and 2 brothers who died in infancy. A00003B2003NV05
