F. Miles Nelson, 86

Detroit Lakes - F. Miles Nelson, 86, died Monday, March 6, 2001 at the Frazee Care Center.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, March 17, at 2 p.m. at First Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes with Rev. David Peterson officiating. Interment will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Frazee. David-Donehower Funeral Home of Detroit Lakes is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be held for one hour prior to services.

F. Miles Nelson was born on April 8, 1914 at Paynesville, the son of Milton and Mina (Kramer) Nelson. He was raised and educated in the Frazee-Vergas area. he received his bachelor's degree from Bemidji State University and his master's degree from the University of North Dakota at Grand Forks.

In 1939, Miles married Margaret Gennes. He taught in Red Lake, Tower, Sleepy Eye and Redwood Falls and then served as principal in Morton, Esko, Thief River Falls, International Falls, Detroit Lakes and Prior Lake. He retired in 1976 and returned to Detroit Lakes.

Miles was instrumental in implementing the quarter scheduling system and helped found the cross- country ski team at Detroit Lakes. While in college, he was a football captain and track star at BSU. He also served on the North Central School Certification Board and the Area Mental Health Board.

He enjoyed making maple syrup, cutting wood, gardening and harvesting wild rice.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret of Frazee; a son, Darby (Geri) of Champlin; two grandchildren; a brother, Harry of Mackinen; and a sister, Angie (Oscar) Schultz of Grand Rapids.

Miles was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Mitzi; and a sister, Roxie. A00003B2000MA14
