Mentor - Ed Neibauer, 95, died on Sunday, March 16, 2003 at the Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesay, March 19 (today) at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Mentor with Monsignor Roger Grundhaus and the Rev. David Super officiating. Casketbearers will be Nicholas Neibauer, Dusty Neibauer, Casey Neibauer, Jeremy Hanson, Jennifer Hanson and Kraig Erickson. Interment will be in St. Lawrence Catholic Cemetery with military honors accorded by Vanderwaal-Lusty American Legion Post #421 of Mentor and the VFW Post #6891 of McIntosh. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service.

Edwin Phillip Neibauer was born on November 25, 1907, the son of Joseph and Mary (Harnett) Neibauer, in Osakis. He attended school in Cass Lake until moving to Crary, N.D., where he graduated from high school. He received his bachelor's degree from Mayville State Teachers College and his master's degree from the University of North Dakota. He taught and coached in Monango, N.D. and also held an adminstrative position there.

On June 10, 1941, he married Edna Carlson. He entered the Army on October 5, 1942, where he served in the Counter Intelligence Corps. Ed served in Hawaii, the Philippine Islands and Japan during World War II. He was discharged on November 30, 1945. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion. After his discharge, Ed was principal and a coach in the McIntosh School until 1958. He was superintendent of schools in Mentor until his retirement in 1975.

Ed and Edna lived on Cable Lake, near Mentor, since his retirement. Ed loved sports, especially basketball. He was an avid fan of UND basketball, as well as many other area teams. He enjoyed giving tours of his memorabilia at his home on Cable Lake. Ed enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren play ball. He took great pride in the fact that he attended more than 8,000 basketball games during his lifetime.

Survivors include his wife, Edna; sons, Tom (Susan) of Middle River and Nick (Debra) of Fertile; a daughter, Nancy Neibauer-Cole (Jim Cole) of Moorhead; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Edwin was preceded in death by his son, Michael Neibauer; his parents; brothers, Arthur, John (Bernie) and Earl; and his sister, Loretta Setter. A00003B2003MR19
