Gerald Mortensen, 66

Strandquist - Gerald Mortensen, 66, died on Thursday, May 1, 2003 at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 5 at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Strandquist with the Rev. David Pretty officiating. Bev Folland was the organist and Vange Carlson was the soloist. Casketbearers were Adam Zachman, Jeff Zachman, Brent Stolka, Justin Giese, Dave Rux, Dave Matter and Kenny Peterson. Interment was in Mission Cemetery in Strandquist.

Gerald Dean Mortensen was born on March 12, 1937, the son of Carl P. and Elizabeth J. (Betts) Mortensen, in Argyle. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and attended various schools in the area. Gerald entered the U.S. Army on January 12, 1955, and was honorably discharged on December 17, 1957.

On February 24, 1962, he married Carol H. Matter. The couple made their home in Delano until January 1983, when they moved to Strandquist. Gerald worked for Marshall County in maintenance. He was a precision machinist and electrician, and he also worked for Tonka Toys. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, making picture frames and he loved spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of the American Legion Post #0466 of Strandquist and a life member of the North America Hunting Club.

Survivors include his wife, Carol of Strandquist; three children, Debs (Zachary) Zachman of Delano, Randy (Leta) of Montrose, and Allen (Sandy) of Montrose; four grandchildren; mother-in-law, Helen Matter of Delano; brothers and sisters, Myrtle Holmstrom of South St. Paul, Andy (Shirley) of Olgilvie, Dale (Carol) of Heron, S.D., Arthur of Thief River Falls, Orville (Jane) of Montrose, and Karen (Kenneth) Peterson of Ellsworth, Wisc.; and several nieces and nephews.

Gerald was preceded in death by his sister, Blanche Waterworth; brothers, Allen, Melvin and John Mortensen; his parents; and brothers-in-law, Leonard Holmstrom and Aaron Waterworth. A00003B2003MY07
