Ruth
was born March 28, 1916 in Lewiston, the daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. August II Leuhmann nee Rose
Mueller. On December 19, 1943 she married Mervin S.
Milsten in Lewiston.
As
a youth, Ruth achieved statewide and national
recognition for her 4-H club work. Education was
always a priority. Ruth graduated from Lewiston
High School in 1934 at a time when very few women
completed their schooling. She graduated from the
University of Minnesota and received her teaching
certificate from the University of North Dakota.
While
attending college she served as the 4-H summer
assistant in Norman County and was one of the
original Beta of Clovia Sorority sisters. She was
also Home Agent in Mahnomen County and for 20 years
she was a home economics teacher in Newfolden and
Greenbush. She was an active participant in the
First Lutheran Churches of Mahnomen and Middle
River, serving on the Ladies Aid, teaching in
Sunday School and leading youth groups. Ruth, a
beloved mother of three valedictorians, was always
able to provide hospitality for extended friends
and family. All of her grandchildren received
support and encouragement &endash; both financial
and emotional to pursue their college educations.
Baking
cloverleaf and caramel rolls and everyone's
favorite cookie was a joy to Ruth. Ruth showed her
love of music and arts by making an extraordinary
effort to encourage her family's cultural
development and the appreciation of the finer
things in life. After her husband Mervin's passing,
Ruth moved to Augustana apartments in Minneapolis
