- Alma Melvie, 84, died Friday, March 9, 2001
at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River
Falls.
Funeral
services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March
17, at
Viking
Covenant Church in Viking with Rev. Jeff Schirle
and Rev. Ollie Urdahl officiating. Gloria Lee and
Jan Lee will serve as accompanists, and musical
selections will be presented by Virgil and Marville
Hjelle, Dr. Peter Johnson and Alma's grandchildren
and great-grandchildren.
Grandsons
Kevin Melvie, Kraig Melvie, Alan Melvie, Joel
Melvie, Shane Wahl, Jeff Hugg and Joshua Hugg will
serve as casketbearers. Honorary Casketbearers will
be Raymond Drotts, Don Dyrdal, Steven Furuseth,
LeRoy Sustad, Alvin Asp, Ivan Melvie, Glen Regan,
Glen Nelson, Jared Oquist, Alden Hugg and Ray
Johnson. Interment will be in Bethlehem Cemetery in
New Solem township of Marshall county.
Visitation
will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. prayer
service today (Wednesday, March 14) at Green
Funeral Home in Thief River Falls. Visitation will
also be held for one hour prior to services at the
church on Saturday.
Alma
Olivia Rust was born on November 17, 1916 in Norden
township of Pennington county, the daughter of
Martinus and Bertha (Dyrdal) Rust. She was the
first baby baptized at Norden Lutheran Church and
was later confirmed there. Alma attended Gopher
Mound School in Norden township and Lincoln High
School in Thief River Falls, graduating in
1934.
On
December 29, 1939, she was united in marriage to
Ernest Theodore Melvie at her parents' home in
Norden township. Alma continued her education,
graduating from Mounds Park School of Nursing. She
worked as a nurse at Mounds Park Hospital in St.
Paul and at St. Luke's Hospital and later Oakland
Park Nursing Home, both in Thief River Falls. Alma
also worked as a private duty nurse. During the
1950's, she also drove gravel truck for her
husband's gravel business.
She
enjoyed music and served as church organist,
pianist and choir director. She also sang and
performed as a soloist and with others. She enjoyed
cooking, baking, entertaining and especially
spending time with her children, grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
Alma
was a member of the Good Cheer Club for many years,
serving frequently as an officer. She was also a
Sunday school teacher and member of the ladies
fellowship where she held office on the district
level.
Survivors
include two sons, Ernest Jr. (Theresa) and Erwin
(Viola), both of Viking; four daughters, Marilyn
Wahl of Greenbush, Carolyn (Louis) Hugg of Andover,
Orlette (Al) Gjerde of Thief River Falls, and
Darleen (Wilbur) Bogue of Hackensack; 12
grandchildren; and nine
great-grandchildren.
Alma
was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Sr. in
1998; her parents; an infant sister, Myrtle; and a
great-grandson, Jerad Nelson.
