C. Leonard Melin, 86

Thief River Falls - C. Leonard Melin, 86, died Wednesday, January 23, 2002 at Innovis Hospital in Fargo, N.D.

Funeral services were held at 11 Melin Obit a.m. on Saturday, January 26, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls with Rev. Marcia Sylvester officiating. Special music was provided by Paula Adamson and Greg Dally. Diane Johnson was the soloist. Casketbearers were Gary Weiss, Randy Cooper, Jim Audette, Kurt Weiss, Gale Schmitz and Jerry Jenkins. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery in Thief River Falls with Green Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Carl Leonard Melin was born on February 11, 1915 in Polk Centre Township of Pennington County, the son of Carl R. and Elida (Anderson) Melin. He attended the Northwest School of Agriculture in Crookston, graduating in 1932.

On June 5, 1939, Leonard was united in marriage to Isabel Weiss at Wylie Lutheran Church. The couple farmed in Polk Centre Township until 1974 when they moved to rural Thief River Falls. Leonard worked at Hydra-Mac, and for more than 10 years, he and Izzy owned and operated "The Sawdust Parlor."

He served on the Pennington County Soil Water Conservation District board for five years and the Red Lake Electric Cooperative board for 27 years, serving as its president for 24 years. Leonard also served as a director of Wylie Elevator and St. Hilaire school board. In 1968, the family hosted a 4-H exchange student from Switzerland, and in 1974, Leonard and Izzy were the recipients of the Valley Farmer and Homemaker award at the Red River Valley Winter Shows.

Leonard enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing cards, watching baseball and hockey on television and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-granddaughter.

Survivors include his wife, Isabel; a son, Tom (Val) Melin of Ada; a daughter, Shelly (Kirby) McFarlane of Thief River Falls; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and a sister, Hazel Maves of Thief River Falls.

Leonard was preceded in death by his parents. A00003B2002JA30
