Bejou - Mary L. McCollum, 77, died Friday, December 14, 2001 at Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home in Mahnomen.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Monday, December 17, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Bejou with Rev. Clem Wagstrom officiating. Mary Nell Preisler and Dorothy Goos served as organists, and special music was presented by Gary Hamre. Casketbearers were Donald Svenby, Aaron Natwick, Jeff McCollum, Trent McCollum, Darrel Miller, Jesse McCollum and Bethany White. Honorary casketbearers were all of Mary's grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Interment was in Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery in Mahnomen with Mattson Funeral Home of Mahnomen in charge of the arrangements.

Mary First was born on July 10, 1924 at rural Fosston, the daughter of Peter "Fred" and Susie (Holdmann) First. She grew up in the Fosston area where she attended country schools. After completing her education, she began working for Harold Sirjord.

On January 15, 1941, she married Loren McCollum in Mahnomen. The couple moved to a farm east of Bejou, and in addition to helping Loren on the farm, Mary picked potatoes and worked on the Schermerhorn Farm. After Loren's death on February 28, 1974, Mary continued to make her home on the farm. During the 1980's, she worked at the Bejou Store, baking pies and stocking shelves. During the 1990's, she worked for a few years as a housekeeper at Stardust Suites. Through the years, Mary also helped her son, Terry, and his wife, Theresa, at their hunting preserve where she cleaned pheasants and made doughnuts. In November 2001, she moved to St. Mary's Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes and resided there for a short time before moving to Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home.

Mary was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, its Ladies Aid, the VFW Auxiliary and Homemakers Club.

She enjoyed baking, especially doughnuts, quilting, crocheting afghans, sewing clothes for her grandchildren and playing cards and bingo with her friends.

Mary is survived by three sons, Dennis (Cynthia) of Fertile and Ordell (Doris) and Terry (Theresa), both of Bejou; three daughters, Phyllis (Bob) Miller of St. Hilaire, Marilyn (Dave) Natwick of Winger and Laurie (Mike) Semanko of Fargo, N.D.; 23 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Elizabeth "Lizzy" Svenby of Detroit Lakes.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; five brothers, Gust, Fred, Hunnas, Henry and John; and a sister, Sophie Paggen. A00003B2001DC26
