River Township - Gene Mattern, 73, of Wing
River Township, died on April 15, 2004 in his
home.
Funeral
services were held at St. John Lutheran Church in
Wadena on Tuesday, April 20, with Rev. Gary
Rokenbrodt officiating. Casket bearers included Bob
Schultz, Cliff Heske, Ron Piepkorn, Keith Milbradt,
Phil Pippo and John Lemmon. Honorary casket bearers
included Gene's grandchildren, nieces and nephews
and all of his many friends. Interment was held at
Wadena Cemetery in Wadena.
Gene
Mattern was born September 15, 1930 in Aberdeen,
S.D., the son of Lambert and Mary Esther
(Underwood) Mattern.
Gene
was united in marriage to Darlene Janet Piepkorn on
February 14, 1953 in Aberdeen, S.D.
Gene
served his country in the U.S. Air Force from
1948-52. He was also a U.S. Public Health Service
Captain from 1952-78.
Military
honors were provided by Company A 194th Armored
Division of the Minnesota National Guard.
Gene
was a member of the Experimental Aircraft
Association, Knob Hill Sportsman Club, Berg-Nylund
American Legion Post - Sebeka.
He
enjoyed flying, hunting, fishing, building planes,
being outdoors, watching sports, archery and
spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors
include his son Steve (Susie) of Fargo, N.D.; two
daughters, Jane (Bill) Langer of Thief River Falls
and Mary Mattern of Fargo, N.D.; four
grandchildren; one brotther, Jim (Carolyn) of
Brandon, S.D.; and one sister, Kathleen Viereck of
Valley Springs, S.D.
He
was preceded in death by his wife Darlene; his
parents; one son, Douglas and one sister, Yvonne
