Arvid Matero, 77

Thief River Falls - Arvid E. Matero, 77, died on Wednesday, September 25, 2002 at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.

Funeral services were held on Arvid Matero Monday, September 30 at First Lutheran Church in Middle River with Rev. John Wollenzien officiating. Lois Peterson was the organist and Van Swanson was the soloist. Selections included "On Eagles' Wings." Casketbearers were Benjamin Beito, Robert Dostal, Dan Freeman Jr., Tom Omdahl, Marc Schenkey, and Michael Schenkey. Honorary casketbearers were all those who attended the service.

Arvid Edwin Matero was born on March 12, 1925, the son of Jacob and Ida (Hiltunen) Matero in Spruce Valley Township near Middle River. He was baptized and confirmed in the Finnish Lutheran faith. He attended school and grew up there. He also attended the Northwest School of Agriculture in Crookston.

On May 26, 1951, Arvid was united in marriage to Alice Johnson in Thief River Falls. The couple has since made their home in Middle River where Arvid was employed at the former Peterson Bidick Co., then at the Midland Co-Op Oil Association for several years. He later managed the Middle River Municipal Liquor Store and the couple also owned and operated the drive-in restaurant in Middle River for five years. From 1966 until retirement, he farmed on a small scale and enjoyed traveling, bowling, fishing and especially his family.

Survivors include his wife, Alice; two daughters, Deborah (John) Zak of St. Hilaire and Eileen (Randy) Johnson of Mission, Texas; two grandchildren; one brother, Art of Middle River; one sister, Grace of Middle River; a sister-in-law, Virginia Matero of Colorado; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Arvid was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Raymond and Elmer; and three sisters, Gertrude, Elvira and an infant sister.
