Marchildon, 83
Duluth
- Val F. Marchildon, 83, formerly of Red Lake
Falls, died on Monday, October 21, 2002 at his home
in Duluth.
Funeral
services were held on Friday, October 25 at St.
Michael's Catholic Church in Duluth. Interment will
be in Red Lake Falls at a later date.
Val
F. Marchildon was born on October 10, 1919, the son
of Gilbert and Mary (Baril) Marchildon in Red Lake
Falls. He attended Lafayette High School in Red
Lake Falls and then taught country school in Red
Lake County from 1937 to 1939. He then attended St.
John's University.
From
1943 to 1946, he served in the US Navy as a Lt. JG.
He earned the Asiatic Occupation Medal, WWII
Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Navy
Occupation Medal with Asia clasp, Combat Service
Commemorative Medal and the Navy Commemorative
Medal. He served on the USS South Dakota
Battleship, on the Island of Saipan, Navy
Ammunition Depot on Oahu, Hawaii and the Bureau of
Naval Personnel in Washington, D.C. After the war,
he received his master of arts degree from the
University of Minnesota. He then taught and coached
at the high school in Melrose from 1948 to 1952. On
June 2, 1960, Val married Phyllis Zins Theroux.
From 1953 until his retirement in 1983, he was an
elementary principal and teacher at Mt. Iron, where
he also coached.
Val
was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and a
50-year member of the American Legion, where he
recently received a certificate of appreciation for
having the longest consecutive service.
Survivors
include six children, Michael (Alicia) of Morton,
Ill., Mark (Danielle) of Woodbury, Renee (Michael)
Gerlach of Duluth, Janine Marchildon of Woodbury,
Laura (Tim) Saarela of Lakeville and Martha (Dean)
Wolff of Hermantown; a brother, Ralph (Harriet) of
Oregon; sisters, Marion Riche of Boise, Idaho and
Loretta Schwegman of Willmar; and eight
