Vernon Malafa, 84

East Grand Forks - Vernon "Vern" Malafa, 84, died Monday, January 28, 2002 at Valley Eldercare in Grand Forks, N.D.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 31, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in East Grand Forks. Interment will take place in the spring in Calvary Cemetery in Grand Forks. Stennes Funeral Home of East Grand Forks is in charge of the arrangements.

Vernon Malafa was born on August 8, 1917 in Pisek, N.D., the son of Frank and Mary (Bazel) Malafa. He grew up and attended school in Lankin, N.D. He worked on the family farm and managed the Orr (N.D.) Elevator for a number of years.

In 1942, he marred Sena Peters. Vern moved to Grand Forks, N.D. where he worked as a police officer for the City of Grand Forks. He also played in numerous area bands, including the Country Playboys on KNOX radio, the Flying Dutchmen, the Bill Dvorak Band and the Vern Malafa Northwest Waltz and Polka Band. He also worked as a salesman for numerous car dealerships in the Grand Forks area. On May 28, 1963, he married Turene Torgerson Cariveau in Crookston.

Vern is survived by his wife, Turene of East Grand Forks; three daughters, Bonnie Sue Anderson of Thief River Falls, Cindy (John) Kingsbury of Bemidji, and Bonnie Mae Egeland of East Grand Forks; three sons, Paul (Linda) Cariveau of East Grand Forks, Rodney (Lois) Malafa of Black Canyon City, Ariz., and Jerry (Renee) Cariveau of Hayward, Calif.; 24 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Leonard, Melvin, Mike and Andy; and a sister, Alice. A00003B2002FB06
