Gilferd Lian, 81

Thief River Falls - Gilferd Lian, 81, formerly of Gatzke, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001 at the CNC Unit of Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.

Lian Obit Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 7, at United Lutheran Church in Gatzke with Rev. Sandra Hollands officiating. Mary Klamar was the organist, and vocal music was provided by Mary Ann Lunsetter. Casketbearers were Duane Lian, Ron Gilbert, Dale Wold, Gerald Foss, Arlen Foss and Ken Mehrkens. Interment was in Moose River Cemetery in Rollis township of Marshall county. Green Funeral Home of Thief River Falls was in charge of the arrangements.

Gilferd H. Lian was born on May 1, 1919 in Flom, the son of Lars and Mary (Aune) Lian. He was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith. The family lived in Flom until moving to Mitchum, Saskatchewan, Canada where they lived for a short time. They later moved to Gatzke, settling in Rollis township. Gilferd attended Loven Country School near Gatzke.

During the early 1940's, he worked for Pete Freland near Cummings, N.D. He also worked for Jardin Bridge Company in Fargo, N.D. for several years. For many years, he worked as a commercial fisherman for Ray McMillan in Florida, stone crabbing during the winter months. For a few years, he worked for Stordahl Trucking. From 1958 until his retirement in 1990, Gilferd was employed at Maynard and Ken Mehrkens Farms.

In his earlier years, he spent time hunting and fishing. Gilferd especially enjoyed working for the Mehrkens and spending time with his nephew, Richard.

He was a member of the Eagles for 54 years.

Gilferd is survived by a brother, Palmer (Gail) Lian of Grygla; two sisters, Luella Foss of Fargo, N.D. and Myrtle Gilbert of Thief River Falls; a sister-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Hank, Sid, Orville and Eilert; a sister, Evelyn; and a niece. A00003B2000AP11
