Detroit
Lakes - Rodney A. Lia, 62, died Friday, April
13, 2001 at his home in Detroit Lakes.
Funeral
services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April
17, at West-Kjos Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes with
Rev. Keith Barberg officiating. Vicki Marthaler was
the organist, and Stacy Abrahamson was the
vocalist. Casketbearers were Dr. Larry Knauf, Arnie
Mickelberg, Bob Johnson, Al Seltz, Charlie Walker
and Steve O'Hearne. Interment was in Oak Grove
Cemetery at Detroit Lakes.
Rodney A.
Lia was born on June 15, 1938 at Detroit Lakes, the
son of Arnold and Kathryn (Mickelberg) Lia. He grew
up and attended school in Detroit Lakes, graduating
from Detroit Lakes High School in 1957. Rodney
served in the United States Air Force, earning the
rank of staff sergeant.
On May
26, 1993, he was united in marriage to Ruth Bakke
at Detroit Lakes. He had a long sales career in
Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Florida.
He was also an insurance adjuster for several years
with Erickson and Braun in Detroit Lakes, working
as manager of its Thief River Falls office.
Rodney's work experience also included several
years as a house painter and restaurant and bar
owner and manager.
At one
time, he was an active member of First Lutheran
Church in Detroit Lakes.
Rodney
enjoyed many different sports, especially baseball
which he played while in the Air Force.
Survivors
include his wife, Ruth; a son, Mark Lia of Lansing,
Mich.; two daughters, Tammy (Jeff) Thomson of
Troutdale, Ore. and Debbie Lia; a sister, Sharon
(Michael) O'Hearne of Tacoma, Wash.; two stepsons,
Michael (Rhonda) Manthey of Eden Valley and David
(Dori) Bakke of Lake Park; two stepdaughters,
Nadine (Charlie) Walker and Alison (Tom) Heurung,
both of Detroit Lakes; two grandchildren; seven
step grandchildren; and two step
great-grandchildren.
He was
