Donald Lerud, 68

lerud obitCasa Grande, Ariz. - Donald Lerud, 68, formerly of Thief River Falls, died Friday, February 9, 2001 at his home in Casa Grande, Ariz.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 17, at Our Saviour's Free Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls with Rev. Terry Olson and Rev. Rodney Stueland officiating. Judy Hogberg was the organist, and vocalists were Paul and Luther Stueland and Marlow Nash. Casketbearers were Jessica Lerud, Ted Lerud, Kirsten Melvie, Danielle Stueland, Mariah Stueland, Bryana Stueland, Brooklyn Stueland, Myles Hogberg, David Morken and Kjell Melvie. Interment was in Silverton Cemetery. Green Funeral Home of Thief River Falls was in charge of the arrangements.

Donald Leroy Lerud was born on June 28, 1932 in Grand Forks, N.D., the son of Alfred and Alda (Sander) Lerud. He graduated from Central High School in Grand Forks in 1950. He received his bachelor and master of arts degree from the University of North Dakota at Grand Forks.

In October of 1954, Donald entered the U.S. Army at Fort Benning, Ga. He served as a lieutenant in Ulm, Germany.

While serving in Germany, he was married to Helen Peterson of Stephen on July 9, 1955. After his discharge from the service, he worked in the field of commercial art in Minneapolis and Green Bay, Wisc.

From 1959 until 1961, Don taught art at Mapleton. He began teaching art at Lincoln High School in the fall of 1961 and remained there until his retirement in 1991.

Donald was an active member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church where he served as deacon, taught Sunday school and served as Sunday school superintendent.

He enjoyed traveling, camping, painting, creating works of art and especially spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Donald is survived by his wife, Helen; two sons, Kraig of Orlando, Fla. and Jonathan (Terry) of Hampden, Mass.; two daughters, Dawn (Kjell) Melvie of Thief River Falls and Ann (Paul) Stueland of Casa Grande, Ariz.; a sister, Rita (Arnold) Johnson of Larimore, N.D. seven grandchildren; three nephews; and two nieces.
