Ruby Larson, 85

Roseau - Ruby Larson, 85, died Thursday, June 28, 2001 at Sheltering Oaks Nursing Home in Roseau.

Funeral services were held at 11 Larson obit a.m. on Monday, July 2, 2001 at United Lutheran Church in Gatzke with Rev. Sandra Hollands officiating. Gloria Sistad was the organist, and the soloist was Julie Walsh. Casketbearers were Ruby's nephews, Gary Peterson, Wayne Larson, Delray Larson, Leland Larson, Darrell Taie, Mylan Abrahamson, Jerome Peterson, Gaylan Gramstad, Roger Gramstad and James Peterson. Interment was in Landstad Cemetery in Gatzke with Collins Funeral Home of Middle River in charge of the arrangements.

Ruby Cecilia Larson was born on August 6, 1915 in Rollis township near Gatzke, the daughter of Iver and Hulda (Mattson) Larson. She was educated at Rollis School near Gatzke and was baptized and confirmed at Moose River Lutheran Church. Ruby's father died when she was four years old, and she spent most of her life helping her mother with the farm work and serving as a "second mother" to her many nieces and nephews.

For several years, Ruby and her mother lived in other communities, including LaCrosse, Wisc. and Minneapolis. When Ruby's brother, Roy, took over the family farm, she and her mother purchased a small home just west of Gatzke. They also resided in Roseau and Thief River Falls. After her mother died, Ruby moved to Crookston where she worked as a nanny. In January of 1992, she moved to the Karlstad Memorial Nursing Home, and in January of 1997 to Sheltering Oaks Nursing Home in Roseau.

She was an active member of Moose River Lutheran Church which later became United Lutheran Church of Gatzke.

Ruby enjoyed playing the guitar, singing, telling stories and reading to her nieces and nephews and offering an extra hand whenever anyone needed help.

Survivors include a sister, Frances Peterson of Lansing, Iowa, 10 nephews and seven nieces.

Ruby was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Alice Larson, Ellen Gramstad, Gertie Abrahamson and Inez Taie; two brothers, Roy and Herman Larson' and a nephew. A00003B2001JL04
