Morris Koland, 84

Karlstad - Morris Koland, 84, died on Thursday, March 20, 2003 at Karlstad Healthcare Center.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 24 at First Lutheran Church in Karlstad with the Rev. Gary Halverson officiating. Corinne Jacobson was the organist and Cathy Erickson was the vocalist. Casketbearers were Brent Boen, Paul Boen, Corey Boen, Darwyn Anderson, Rory Anderson and Ronnie Wollin. Honorary casketbearers were all those who attended the service. Interment was in Karlstad Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Karlstad American Legion Post.

Morris Alfred Koland was born on July 30, 1918, the son of Robert and Nettie (Underberg) Koland, in Arveson Township of Kittson County. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He grew up in Arveson and graduated fro Karlstad High School in 1937. Morris served with the United States Army in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and in Central Europe. Following his discharge in September 1945, he returned to Karlstad.

On June 3, 1948, he married Jane Carlson in Pinewood. The couple made their home in Minneapolis for a year, then returned to Karlstad, where they have since resided. Morris was a member of First Lutheran Church, the Karlstad American Legion Post, and the Karlstad Eagles. He was employed by the Minnesota Department of Transportation as a mainenance worker for 28 years, retiring in 1983. He enjoyed golf, playing cards and hunting.

Survivors include his wife, Jane; one son, Ray of Karlstad; a daughter, Colleen (Bill) Ackerman of Menifee, Calif.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Roger (Una Mae) of Bloomington; five sisters, Emojean (Roy) Anderson, Marjorie Wollin, and Yvonne (Philip) Boen, all of Karlstad, and Donna Mae (Bill) Sumner of Liberal, Kan., and Helen (Don) Wysocki of Lakeville; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Morris was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Joyce.
