Sydney Klemmetson, 83

McIntosh - Sydney Klemmetson, 83, of McIntosh died on Saturday, January 3, 2004 at First Care Hospital in Fosston. Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 9 at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in rural McIntosh, with Rev. Dale Mellgren officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour before the funeral at the church. Interment will be at Our Savior's Lutheran Cemetery in McIntosh.

Sydney Carl Melvin Klemmetson was born June 12, 1920, the son of Henry and Olga (Lebacken) Klemmetson on their farm in Lessor Township, north of McIntosh, where he grew up, and attended rural school. Sydney was the youngest of two children and helped on the farm. He liked dogs, and trained his dogs to pull him on the sled when he was a young.

Sydney enlisted in the United States Navy on September 17, 1942, and served until he received his honorable discharge on September 15, 1944. He was awarded the Purple Heart on July 19, 1943 for being wounded in the South Pacific on June 16, 1943 aboard the Naval fighting ship Celeno. While unloading cargo off Guadalcanal, his ship was attacked by a swarm of Japanese bombers. Fifteen of the crew were killed, and nineteen were wounded in the attack.

He was united in marriage to Winifred DeFrang on June 27, 1948 in McIntosh where they resided. Sydney worked at several local businesses before working as a custodian at the Win-E-Mac School for many years. He enjoyed being involved with the school, and attended many school activities after his retirement. Sydney was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, and a member of the McIntosh VFW. He and his wife enjoyed traveling all over the United States, and for many years, Sydney enjoyed decorating his home, and yard at Christmas time. Sydney entered McIntosh Manor Nursing Home on December 20, 1999, and Winifred passed away on February 2, 2000.

Survivors include many nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Winifred; and one sister, Mabel Hanson.
