A. Roger Kilen, 70

Middle River - A. Roger Kilen, 70, died on Tuesday, September 9, 2003 at his home in Whiteford Township.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, September 13 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church of Thief Lake with the Rev. Mark Rittmann officiating. Casketbearers were Jay Johnson, Kevin Kilen, Scott Kilen, Brandon Schuyler, Danny Werman, Jerel Kilen, Brian Gillund and Dean Peterson. Honorary casketbearers were Roger's grandchildren. Interment was in Our Saviors Church Cemetery of Thief Lake with military honors accorded by the Middle River American Legion Post #444.

Alfred Roger Kilen was born on September 5, 1933 in Greenbush, the son of Alfred and Myrtle (Johnson) Kilen. He grew up and attended school in Whiteford Township of Marshall County and graduated from Middle River High School in 1951. He was baptized and confirmed at Our Saviors Lutheran Church of Thief Lake, where he was a life-long member. Roger served with the U.S. Air Force from 1952 until 1956, then worked in Milwaukee, Wisc., for a year.

On April 8, 1960 he married Sharon "Dowie" Olberg in Thief River Falls. The couple made their home on the farm in Whiteford Township, where they have since resided. Roger was a member and past commander of the Middle River American Legion Post #444 and held various other offices. He served on the Whiteford Town Board, the Our Saviors Church Council and was involved in the farm management program at the Thief River Falls AVTI.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon "Dowie," four sons, Bruce of Las Vegas, Nev., Greg (Carol) of Warren, Doug (Cindi) of Thief River Falls and Brad of Middle River; 11 grandchildren; three brothers, Donnie of Middle River, Wayne (Shirley) of Holt and Joe (Lindee) of Middle River; three sisters, Marilyn Shalloe of Hibbing, Connie (Gene) Folden of Newfolden and Edith Zahn of Newfolden; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
