Locally, Bud was an active member of the American Legion, VFW, Rotary Club, Golden K, Elks Lodge, St. Bernard's Catholic Church Pastoral Council, Northwest Medical Association, and Northwest Medical Center board of directors. He was also a member of the Our Own Hardware advisory panel in Minneapolis. He served on the Elks building committee, was president of the Thief River Falls Chamber of Commerce, and was Chef D. Gear of the 40 et 8, a part of the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Darlene of Thief River Falls; two sons, Tim (Linda) Kelly of Milwaukee, Wisc. and Jeff (Maribeth) Kelly of Apple Valley; five grandchildren; and a sister, Violet Larson of Greeley, Colo.
