Vernon Kees, 88

Thief River Falls - Vernon Kees, 88, died Monday, July 2, 2002 at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.

Funeral services were held Monday, Kees, Vernon photo July 29 at Zion Lutheran Church with Rev. Gary Johnson officiating. Ida Nordvall was the organist and soloists Joel and Laura Rude and Anne Rude sang "On Eagles Wings" and "The Old Rugged Cross." Casketbearers were Mark Swanson, Pete Mattison, Wade Sorenson, Sam Huston, Jeremy Kees and Jared Alby. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery.

Vernon Albert Kees was born on June 19, 1914 to Isaiah and Mary (McDonald) Kees in Drayton, N.D. He attended the Herrick School.

On August 17, 1937, he married Lillian Scharmer in Grafton, N.D. The couple had three children and farmed in Drayton until 1952 when they moved to Thief River Falls and continued to farm. In May 1963, the couple bought Fred Johnson's Boarding Home and operated it as Kees' Rest Home until their retirement in 1980. Lillian passed away on July 18, 1985.

On March 27, 1987, Vernon married Vivian Rude. The couple lived in Thief River Falls.

Vernon was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, the Eagles, and was a member of the Sons of Norway, all in Thief River Falls. He enjoyed reading, traveling, dancing, and he collected caps.

Survivors include his wife, Vivian; two daughters, Vivian (Harley) Knutson of Thief River Falls, and LaVerne Sorenson of Big Sky, Mont.; one son, Harold Kees of Edinburg, Texas; six stepchildren, Sheryl (Claude) Mesrour of Crookston, Richard of Bemidji, Joe (Kathy) Rude of Billings, Mont., Jean Gone of Juneau, Ala., Robert (Cori) Rude of Bemidji, and Virginia (Gary) Haberstroh of Mandan, N.D.; six grandchildren; 14 step grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Kees of Grafton, N.D.; and many other friends and relatives.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lillian; brother, Donald; and one sister, Elizabeth Kees.
