Vernon Kappes, 65

Ulen - Vernon B. Kappes, 65, formerly of Thief River Falls, died on Thursday, September 5, 2002 at Viking Manor Nursing Home in Ulen. Kappes. Vernon

Funeral services were held on Monday, September 9 at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Thief River Falls with Father Tim McGee officiating. Carol Amundson was the organist and Shelly Burkel provided special music. Casketbearers were Jeffrey Kappes, David Kappes, Mike Kappes, David Johnson, Steve Kappes, Greg Kappes, David Kratka and Martin Moeglein. Interment was in St. Bernard's Cemetery.

Vernon B. Kappes was born on November 4, 1936, the son of Louis and Florence (Boerger) Kappes in Borup. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith. He grew up, attended school and graduated from Borup High School. On May 31, 1955, Vernon enlisted in the United States Air Force in Fargo, N.D. He attended Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas and became an aircraft mechanic.

On May 21, 1960, Vernon was married to Marion Geray in Beaulieu. On May 30, 1963, he was honorably discharged from the service. Following his discharge, he attended McConnell Airline School in Minneapolis and began working for North Central Airlines, which eventually became Northwest Airlines. The couple lived in Grand Forks, N.D., Thief River Falls, Mankato, Dayton, Ohio and Wausau, Wisc. Vernon retired in 1990.

He was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church and the American Legion Ecklund-Holmstrom Post #117 of Thief River Falls. He enjoyed travel, polka dancing, gardening, deer hunting, and being outdoors. Vernon was a fan of the Minnesota Twins and the Vikings. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He was also involved in many organizations that helped the handicapped.

Survivors include his wife, Marion of Thief River Falls; children, Jean (Darby) Barron of Thief River Falls, Jacqueline (Brian) Hunt of Maple Grove, and Jerold and James, both of Thief River Falls; six grandchildren; seven brothers and sisters, Virgil of Sioux Falls, S.D., Norbert (Evelyn) of Minneapolis, Russell (Inez) of Greenbush, Chester (Barbara) of Minneapolis, Louis (Laurie) Jr. of Baxter, Diane (Terry) Patterson of San Jose, Calif., and Benno of Brainerd; a sister-in-law, Jane Bauer of Minneapolis; and many nieces and nephews.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Nicholas and James; and a sister, Marcella.
