Sander Joppru, 78

Thief River Falls - Sander Joppru, 78, died Wednesday, June 13, 2001 at the CN & C Unit of Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls. Joppru Obit

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 16, at Zion Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls with Rev. Gary Johnson officiating. Ida Nordvall was the organist, and the soloist was Diane Johnson. Casketbearers were Virgil Collins, Andy Joppru, Calvin Joppru, Dean Joppru, Don Joppru, Larry Joppru, Orrin Joppru, Rocky Joppru and Rudy Rude. Military honors were accorded by American Legion Ecklund-Holmstrom Post 117 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2793 of Thief River Falls. Burial was in Satesdal Cemetery in Excel township of Marshall county with Green Funeral Home of Thief River Falls in charge of the arrangements.

Sander Joppru was born on September 25, 1922 in Agder township of Marshall county, the son of Oscar and Tillie (Bergland) Joppru. He was baptized at Satesdal Church and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls. He attended school in Thief River Falls and the Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis.

Sander operated a gas station in Minneapolis. From 1943 until 1945, he served in the U.S. Air Force. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Thief River Falls.

On December 19, 1953, he was united in marriage to Violet Knutson at Zion Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls. Sander worked as a grain inspector for the State of Minnesota for 24 years, for the City of Thief River Falls and as a weed inspector for Red Lake County until his retirement in 1984.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Eagles and the VFW.

Sander enjoyed gardening, telling stories, raising turkeys, reading, current events, watching television and especially spending time and visiting with his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Violet; four daughters, Renae (Terry) Tollefson and Candy (William) Juergens, both of Lino Lakes, Kim (James) Johnsrud of Goodridge and Debra (Joseph) Basil of Golden Valley; two sons, Rick (Mary) Joppru of Minneapolis and Dan (Jan) Joppru of New Salem, N.D.; 14 grandchildren; two brothers, Orville (Mariane) Joppru of Thief River Falls and Richard (Kay) Joppru of Frederick, N.D.; three sisters-in-law; a brother-in-law; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Sander was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Alma Oen and Margaret Taylor; and six brothers, Ted, Alfred, Olaf, Art, Melvin and Clarence. A00003B2001JN20
