Verner Johnson, 81

Macomb, Ill. - Verner Johnson, 81, formerly of Thief River Falls, died Wednesday, February 14, 2001 at Cape Coral Hospital in Cape Coral, Fla.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 17, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Macomb, Ill. with Rev. Michael Thomas officiating. Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery with Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Funeral Home of Macomb in charge of the arrangements.

Verner Bernhard Johnson was born on March 23, 1919 at Duluth, the son of Johannes and Amanda (Karlson) Johnson. He graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1937 and Duluth State Teachers College in 1942. He enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and spent time at Great Lakes Naval Training Station, Midshipman's school at Notre Dame and as a Naval officer on a post-World War II goodwill tour of the world. He received his master's degree from the University of Minnesota and Ed.D. from the University of Missouri.

Verner was united in marriage to Eilene Grinde on July 2, 1950 in Thief River Falls. He taught at Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls and moved to Macomb in 1958 where he taught in the Industrial Education & Technology Department at Western Illinois University for 25 years until his retirement in May of 1983.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Macomb and Macomb Kiwanis Club.

Verner is survived by his wife, Eilene; two daughters, Lynne (Jerry) Riggins of Macomb and Joy (Christopher) Meade of Geneva, Ill.; seven grandchildren; and a sister, Martha Hendrickson of Two Harbors.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Clarence.
