Hilda
Johnson, 97
Chicago,
Ill. - Hilda Carolyn Johnson, 97, formerly of
Green-bush, died on Saturday, September 21, 2002 at
a Chicago area hospital.
Funeral
services were held on Tuesday, September 24 in
Chicago, Ill. and also on Saturday, September 28 at
Bethel Lutheran Church in Greenbush with Rev. Bryce
Fellbaum officiating. Linda Sovde was the organist.
Casketbearers were Jerry Johnson, Wayne Brown,
Maylen James Johnson, Tami Rouse, Darrell Posner
and Duane Johnson. Interment was in Bethlehem
Lutheran Cemetery of rural Greenbush.
Hilda
Carolyn Johnson was born on December 29, 1904, the
daughter of Harold J. and Sina (Berger) Johnson at
the family farm in Hereim Township. She attended
the Gavick School and graduated from Greenbush High
School. She also graduated from Normal School in
Warroad and later from the University of North
Dakota with a teaching degree. She taught at Leo,
Duxby and other rural Minnesota schools until
moving to Chicago in the 1940s. In 1949, she
returned to Greenbush and taught fifth grade for
the last half of the year. In her sixties and
seventies, she taught first grade in Chicago Public
Schools for 13 years.
Survivors
include her son, Maylen James Johnson; four of her
brother Dinus' children, who were like sons and
daughters to her, Duane (Sharon) of Itasca, Ill.,
Maylen Noral (Serena) of Chicago, Ill., Gayle
Dubuerke of Chicage, Ill. and Marlys (Joe) Pupparo
of Jensen Beach, Fla.; a grandniece; several nieces
and nephews and other relatives; and two
cousins.
Hilda
was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Ahla;
a sister, Selma Brown; and three brothers Julius
"Ted," Dinus "Dick" and Roy.
