Alice Johaneson, 87

Grygla - Alice Johaneson, 87, died on Sunday, May 18, 2003 at the St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m on Friday, May 23 at Grace Lutheran Church in Grygla with the Rev. Gary Gilthvedt officiating. Joy Nordby will be the organist and the Beito Family will provide special music. Casketbearers will be Jacob Johaneson, Brent Skibicki, Zach Johaneson, Roger Anderson, Troy Land and Eric Dickovich. Honorary casketbearers will be all of Alice's grandchildren. Interment will be in Our Savior's Cemetery in Grygla. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Alice Lenora Anderson was born on April 18, 1916, the daughter of Jacob and Julia (Dahl) Anderson, in Jelle. She was raised in Hamre Township and attended school in rural Beltrami County. She was baptized and conifirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Grygla. She attended high school in Bemidji, graduating in 1935. She trained for cosmetology in Grand Forks, N.D. Alice worked for Kato Beauty Shop in Grand Forks for a number of years. When World War II broke out, she moved to Seattle, Wash., and worked in the defense plant. She worked as a welder in the Associated Ship Yards. Following the war in 1945, she moved the Minneapolis and later moved to Grygla and married Harry Johnaneson. The couple made their home in Lee Township of Beltrami County, where they farmed. Alice also worked at the turkey plant in Thief River Falls for over 18 years. For the past few years, she has resided at the Lakeshore Lutheran Nursing Home in Duluth.

She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Grygla, where she taught Sunday School and served as the Ladies Aid president for several years. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary of Grygla. Alice also enjoyed making quilts, fishing, gardening and watching the Minnesota Twins on television. She especially enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include five children, Michael (Carol) of Castlerock, Wyo., Wayne of Thief River Falls, Linda Skibicki of Duluth, Donald (Linda) of Delano, and Phyllis Bergeron of Shell Lake, Wisc., 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; many sisters- and brothers-in-law, including a special sister-in-law, Thea Anderson of Grygla; and many nieces and nephews.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Harry; her parents; a grandson; four sisters, Ella Anderson, Clara Englund, Lillian Sundberg and Nina Magnuson; and six brothers, Arthur, Sydney, Manley, Raymond, Herbert and Clifford. A00003B2003MY21
