Glenwood - George Janssen, 70, died on Thursday, March 13, 2003 at the Glacial Ridge Hospital.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 18 at the Hoplin Funeral Home in Glenwood. Interment will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 19 at the Wikstrom Cemetery near Strandquist.

George John Janssen was born on March 12, 1933, the son of George and Amelia (Blum) Janssen in Pipestone. When he was nine years old, the family moved to the Terrace area, where he helped on the farm and attended country school until the eighth grade. He attended Glenwood High School, where he was active in football, baseball, track and many other activities.

He was united in marriage to Myrtle Wikstrom on November 18, 1955 in Newfolden. The couple lived in various areas of Minnesota until finally settling back in Glenwood. He worked in many different fields including farming, road crew, construction and machining. Currently he had been working at Clyde Machines in Glenwood until January 2003. He was known around town as "Big George." George loved teasing and joking around with his many friends. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, remodeling their home and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Myrtle of Glenwood; three daughters, Faye (Richard) Dicken of Thief River Falls, Lana (Duane) Rau of Kensington, and Jill (Jim) Walerius of Glenwood; one son, Cory (Kim) Janssen of Texas; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harold (Darlene) of Bismarck, N.D., and Donald (Elaine) of Underwood; and many nieces and nephews.

George was preceded in death by his parents; a son, George Marty; and one infant sister, Eleanore.
