Grygla
- Vernon Holthusen, 88, died on Monday, July
14, 2003 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in Red Lake
Falls.
Funeral
services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 18
at Grace Lutheran Church in Grygla with the Rev.
Mary Gilthvedt officiating. Casketbearers will be
Billy Wickert, Caleb Holthusen, Zachary Holthusen,
Tobey Holthusen, Joey Holthusen and Lars Sundberg.
Honorary casketbearers will be all of Vernon's
grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Interment
will be in Rosebud Cemetery in Steenerson Township
of Beltrami County. Visitation will be held from 5
to 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 17 at the Johnson-Green
Funeral Home in Thief River Falls with a 7 p.m.
prayer service. Visitation will also be held for
one hour prior to services at the church on
Friday.
Vernon
Roy Holthusen was born in Elizabeth on October 4,
1914, the son of Fred and Ida (Olson) Holthusen.
The family lived in the Thorhult area and Vernon
grew up and attended Sandridge School.
On
April 16, 1950, he married Ellen Johnson in Grygla.
The couple made their home at Thorhult. Vernon was
self-employed. He also drove truck for five years.
He worked on the family sawmill with his father and
brothers, cutting and hauling pulp during the
winter. He hauled gravel until he started working
at the Holthusen Construction Company, from which
he retired in 1985. Vernon was a member of Our
Saviors Lutheran Church in Grygla and also served
on the Steenerson Township Board for many years. He
enjoyed hunting, fishing and bird
watching.
Survivors
include his wife, Ellen of Thorhult; children,
Darald (Lorraine) of Thorhult, Gene (Jodie) of
Viking, Elayne (Wade) Sundberg of Grygla, and
Marilyn (Jerry) Botko of Coon Rapids; 14
grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister,
Dorothy (Clifford) Ness of Delphos, Ohio; and two
sisters-in-law, Hazel Holthusen and Ardell Roen,
both of Grygla.
Vernon
was preceded in death by his parents; sisters,
Evelyn Tanem and Francis Wikert; brothers, Royal,
Johnny and Herbert Holthusen; sister-in-law, Alvina
Holthusen; and two nephews.
