Holmes, 54
Middle
River - Steven C. Holmes, 54, died on Saturday,
January 11, 2003 at Devils Lake, N.D.
Funeral
services were held on
Thursday,
January 16 at the Middle River Community School
with Rev. Mary Gaebler and Rev. John Jorgenson
officiating. Linda Sparby was the pianist and
vocalists were Lois Anderson, Lois Peterson and
Park Avenue. Casketbearers were Bob Ruud, Tom
Super, Eldon Sparby, Wallace Bengston, Lannie Runck
and Orville Wang. Honorary casketbearers were all
those who attended the service. Interment was in
First Lutheran Cemetery in Middle River with
military honors accorded by the Middle River
American Legion Post #444 and the North Dakota Army
National Guard.
Steven
Craig Holmes was born on June 17, 1948, the son of
Squire and Donna (Schenkey) Holmes in Thief River
Falls. He was baptized and confirmed at the First
Lutheran Church in Middle River and graduated from
Middle River High School in 1966. He received his
teaching degree from Moorhead State
University.
On
June 4, 1977, he married Gail Fuller at Silver
Creek Lutheran Church, near Thief River Falls. The
couple has since made their home in Middle River.
In 1974, Steve began his teaching career in Middle
River and taught elementary, physical education,
middle school social studies and special education.
He served in the United States Marines from 1967 to
1978, then with the Roseau 314th Engineering
Detachment from 1983 to 1988. He then moved to the
1-188 Air Defense Artillery at Grand Forks, N.D.
until 2002. He served in various positions there,
serving as Battalion Commander from January 2001
until September 2002. He was currently operations
officer for the HQ 164th Regional Training
Institute at Devils Lake, N.D., holding the rank of
Lt. Colonel. Steve owned and operated the Rex
Café in Middle River in the mid-1970s. He
was a life-long member of the First Lutheran Church
of Middle River, served on the church council, and
was a long-time member of the Middle River American
Legion Post #444.
Survivors
include his wife, Gail; a son, Adam of Minneapolis;
two daughters, Alison of St. Paul and Kelsey, at
home; three brothers, Larry (Loye) of Brookings,
S.D., Rick of Detroit Lakes and Kirk (Rose) of
Fargo, N.D.; and several nieces, nephews, aunts,
uncles and other relatives.
Steven
was preceded in death by his parents and one
nephew.
