Thief River Falls - Wanda Jean Hillyer, 47, died on Thursday, December 4, 2003 at Innovis Hospital in Fargo, ND.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Dec. 9 at Zion Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, with Reverend Gary Johnson officiating. Casket bearers included Dean Martell, Dale Martell, Rick Spiering, Jeff Spiering, Greg Rowley and Randy Rowley. Interment was held at Greenwood Cemetery in Thief River Falls.

Wanda Jean Holmgren was born on August 22, 1956 in Roseau, the daughter of Axel Hilding and Caroline Rose (Miovac) Holmgren. She grew up in Roseau, Osakis and attended school in Thief River Falls.

Wanda worked at Northland Foods in the Bakery Department and Price World in Thief River Falls, before moving to Roseau to manage the Price World Store. She also worked at Sheltering Oaks Nursing Home and Polaris later in Roseau. Wanda moved back to Thief River Falls and opened a daycare, she then worked at the Best Western and in 1996 she started working as a cook at Pizza Hut in Thief River Falls.

Wanda married Steve Groslie in 1974 and to this union two children were born. She was united in marriage to Bill Hillyer in August of 1998.

She enjoyed fishing and watching the Minnesota Vikings. She loved animals, especially her two dogs, Skippy and Minute and her two birds, Zipper and Buffy. Wanda took pride in keeping the farmyard looking nice and enjoyed working in her gardens.

Survivors include her husband, Bill of Thief River Falls; one daughter, Melissa (Rick) Beier of Thief River Falls; three grandchildren; three sisters, Sharon Rowley of Sharon, N.D., Karen (Bob) Sprynczynatyk of Bismarck, N.D. and Deb (Bob) Martell of St. Hilaire; two brothers, Gary (Jennifer) Holmgren of St. Hilaire, and David Holmgren of Thief River Falls; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Mark Groslie, two sisters; Patsy Spiering and Sandra Meyer; three brothers, Wayne, Darrell and Gale; two brothers-in-law, Dean Spiering and Robert Rowley; and her grandparents. A00003B2003DC10
