San Juan Capistrano, Calif. - Peter Hess, 47, died on Wednesday, May 28, 2003.

Memorial services will be held at Coast Hills Community Church in Aliso Viejo, Calif., on June 5 at 11 a.m.

Peter George Hess was born in Thief River Falls on April 21, 1956, the son of Philip and Sharline Hess. He attended school and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1974. He received an associate's degree from Northland Community College in 1976 and a bachelor's degree in marketing from Moorhead State University in 1978.

In June 1978, he married Kathi Jo Swanson of Thief River Falls. In 1979, the couple moved to Santa Monica, Calif., where he attended the Gemological Institute of America. After receiving his graduate gemology degree, he taught diamond and colored gemstone courses for GIA in residence and worldwide for nine years. In 1987, he purchased Snyder and Snyder Jewelers in San Juan Capistrano, Calif. Peter spent over three decades in the jewelry industry.

He was president of the California Jeweler's Association, a member and director of the Jewelers of America, PJS Show Committee, GIA Alumni Association, and the San Juan Capistrano Chamber of Commerce. He was also president-elect of the Monarch Beach Sunrise Rotary Club and was to take office on July 1.

On September 21, 1990, Peter married Linda Knox in Laguna Beach, Calif.

He loved the jewelry industry, his civic friendships, and most of all, his family.

Survivors include his wife, Linda, and step-daughter, Lindsey Knox of Laguna Niguel, Calif.; his parents; brothers, Steven (Judy) of Grand Forks, N.D., and Jeffrey (Arlys) of Nevis; a sister, Cynthia (Arnie) Schultz of Richey, Mont.; and one niece and three nephews.

Peter was preceded in death by his grandparents, three uncles and a cousin. A00003B2003JN04
