Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 11 at the Scandia Lutheran Church in rural Beltrami. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to services at the church. Interment will be in Scandia Cemetery.

Alta Valance Maree Dewar was born on January 22, 1911, the daughter of Walter James and Anna (Radke) Dewar in Crookston. She grew up on the family farm in Hammond Township, was baptized and confirmed at the Scandia Lutheran Church in rural Beltrami and attended the District 220 Dewar School, which was named after her grandfather, James Dewar. Alta graduated from Crookston Central High School in 1929 and went on to attend the Hughes Business College in Crookston. She completed a course in music at St. Joseph's Conservatory of Music in Crookston, and after examinations at Macalester College in St. Paul, received her licentiate from the Minnesota Music Teachers' Association.

On June 3, 1932, Alta was united in marriage to Arvid Lenard Hermodson in Grand Forks, N.D. The couple lived and farmed in Hammond Township. They were both active members of the Scandia Lutheran Church. Alta served as the church organist, taught both Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, was a longtime member of the Ladies Aid and held many church offices. For many years, Alta was a stenographer for the Minnesota Rural Credit Department of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company and later was a copywriter for KROX Radio in Crookston. She taught piano lessons and was a correspondent for the Crookston Daily Times for over 70 years. In 1982, Alta and Arvid received special recognition by the state of Minnesota for residing on a Century Farm. They both drove buses for the Crookston School District for over 24 years and were active in adult 4-H leadership. They enjoyed traveling and had driven to over 40 states. Arvid died on February 27, 1989. Alta had served as secretary for the Polk County Committee on Aging for over ten years and in 2001, was named a Polk County Outstanding Senior Citizen by the committee. A highlight of her life was a visit to the Holy Land in 1995. She was member of the Riverview Hopital Auxiliary, the Polk County Historical Society and the Friends of the Library.

Survivors include a son, Rev. Arlen (Marilyn) of Moorhead; a daughter, ArvaDelle "Del" (Dr. Gene W.) Nagel of San Ramon, Calif.; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
