Dewar Hermodson, 91
Fargo,
N.D. - Alta Dewar Hermodson, 91, died on
Friday, October 4, 2002 at the MeritCare Hospital
in Fargo, N.D.
Funeral
services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, October
11 at the Scandia Lutheran Church in rural
Beltrami. Visitation will be held for one hour
prior to services at the church. Interment will be
in Scandia Cemetery.
Alta
Valance Maree Dewar was born on January 22, 1911,
the daughter of Walter James and Anna (Radke) Dewar
in Crookston. She grew up on the family farm in
Hammond Township, was baptized and confirmed at the
Scandia Lutheran Church in rural Beltrami and
attended the District 220 Dewar School, which was
named after her grandfather, James Dewar. Alta
graduated from Crookston Central High School in
1929 and went on to attend the Hughes Business
College in Crookston. She completed a course in
music at St. Joseph's Conservatory of Music in
Crookston, and after examinations at Macalester
College in St. Paul, received her licentiate from
the Minnesota Music Teachers'
Association.
On
June 3, 1932, Alta was united in marriage to Arvid
Lenard Hermodson in Grand Forks, N.D. The couple
lived and farmed in Hammond Township. They were
both active members of the Scandia Lutheran Church.
Alta served as the church organist, taught both
Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, was a
longtime member of the Ladies Aid and held many
church offices. For many years, Alta was a
stenographer for the Minnesota Rural Credit
Department of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance
Company and later was a copywriter for KROX Radio
in Crookston. She taught piano lessons and was a
correspondent for the Crookston Daily Times for
over 70 years. In 1982, Alta and Arvid received
special recognition by the state of Minnesota for
residing on a Century Farm. They both drove buses
for the Crookston School District for over 24 years
and were active in adult 4-H leadership. They
enjoyed traveling and had driven to over 40 states.
Arvid died on February 27, 1989. Alta had served as
secretary for the Polk County Committee on Aging
for over ten years and in 2001, was named a Polk
County Outstanding Senior Citizen by the committee.
A highlight of her life was a visit to the Holy
Land in 1995. She was member of the Riverview
Hopital Auxiliary, the Polk County Historical
Society and the Friends of the Library.
Survivors
include a son, Rev. Arlen (Marilyn) of Moorhead; a
daughter, ArvaDelle "Del" (Dr. Gene W.) Nagel of
San Ramon, Calif.; nine grandchildren; five
great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews
and other relatives.
Alta
was preceded in death by her husband, Arvid; a son,
Alden Val "Al"; her parents; and a brother, Dorel
James Dewar.
