Warroad
- Katharina Heppner, 86, died on Monday, March
15, 2004 at the Warroad Care Center in Warroad.
A
memorial service was held on Sunday, March 21, at
the Woodland Bible Church in Warroad.
Katharina
Margaret Heppner, the daughter of Justina (Walde)
and Dietrich Enns was born on June 5, 1917 in
Mountain Lake. She grew up in Mountain Lake and
graduated valedictorian from Mountain Lake High
School. After High School she attended the
Northwest Bible College in St. Paul for one
year.
On
January 23, 1940 she and Peter H. Heppner were
united in marriage in Mountain Lake where they
remodeled an old barn into a house they made for
their home. Katharina worked beside her husband
renting seventeen successive farms, as they raised
a growing family. They chose Warroad because of the
Woodland Mennonite Church and bought the farm they
named "The Last Chance Ranch." There she worked
side-by-side with Pete in sheep, dairy and beef
farming, which was a challenge for a young woman
raised in town.
In
1961 Peter was disabled, and Katharina supported
the family by selling Tupperware and CopperCraft in
the area. Together, they began making ceramics;
creating entertainment and beauty for their
neighbors. She utilized books and magazines to
teach herself art dynamics; then conducted classes
on the techniques of brush painting, and kiln
firing for 20 years. They lived in Texas during the
winters for 17 years and were involved with the Rio
Grande Bible Institute. Her hobbies included
holistic health, gardening, especially violets and
other flowers, sewing, needlework, and reading
Christian novels.
