Milwaukee, Wisc. - Hilma Hemstad, 95, formerly
of Plummer, died on Saturday, March 8, 2003 at her
daughter's home in South Milwaukee,
Wisc.
Funeral
services were held on Friday, March 14 at Immanuel
Lutheran Church in Plummer with the Rev. Frank
Ehling officiating. Linda Olson was the organist
and soloist. Casketbearers were Steve Spacek, Greg
Paquin, Don Paquin, Tom Paquin, Jerry Hanson and
Gerald Toulouse. Interment was in Emardville
Cemtery in Plummer.
Hilma
Westerlund was born on July 31, 1907, the daughter
of John and Mary (Nelson) Westerlund in Red Lake
Falls. She was baptized and confirmed in Plummer,
where she grew up and attended country
school.
Hilma was
united in marriage to John Hemstad in St. Hilaire.
The couple lived and farmed near Plummer, until
they moved into town. Hilma worked as a cook for
the Plummer School for 30 years, and retired from
the Plummer Bank as a custodian after 23 years. She
lived on the farm until moving into senior housing
in Plummer. After a stroke, she moved to her
daughter's home in South Milwaukee, Wisc., where
she has since resided. She was a member of Immanuel
Lutheran Church, the Ladies Aid, and the American
Legion Auxiliary of Plummer. Hilma, who was known
to many as "Granny," enjoyed embroidery, reading,
gardening, picking berries, baking bread and doing
the word search puzzles.
Survivors
include her daughter, Dorothy Paquin of South
Milwaukee, Wisc.; four grandchildren; four
great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law; and several
nieces, nephews and many dear friends.
Hilma was
preceded in death by her husband, John, three
sisters, three brothers, and her son-in-law. Ernest
