River Falls - Leonard Hellquist, 81, died
Saturday, August 11, 2001 in Hudson,
Wisc.
Funeral
services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today
(Wednesday,
August 15)
at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls
with Rev. Galen Sylvester officiating. Joyce
Halbasch will be the organist, and the soloist will
be Terri Cuppett. Casketbearers will be Duane
Larson, Gary Reed, Virgil Wold, Roger Hellquist,
John Hellquist and Mark Enge. Honorary
casketbearers will include relatives, friends and
Soo Line co-workers. Interment will be in Greenwood
Cemetery.
Visitation
was held Tuesday, August 14, from 5 to 8 p.m. with
a 7 p.m. prayer service at Green Funeral Home in
Thief River Falls. Visitation will also be held for
one hour prior to services at the
church.
Leonard
Hellquist was born on February 2, 1920 in Thief
River Falls, the son of Charles and Marie (Benson)
Hellquist. He was baptized and confirmed at First
Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls and graduated
from Lincoln High School in 1938. He entered the
U.S. Army on November 5, 1942, serving with the
732nd Company "C" Railroad Battalion in France in
the European Theatre of Operation. He was honorably
discharged on January 7, 1946.
On July
10, 1949, Leonard was united in marriage to Jean
Stephenson in Grand Forks, N.D. The couple lived in
Thief River Falls. Jean died on December 19,
1968.
On July
3, 1970, he married Violet Christianson Torres at
Redeemer Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls. The
couple resided in Thief River Falls. Violet died on
October 22, 1979.
Leonard
worked for the Soo Line Railroad for 40 years,
retiring in 1985.
He was a
member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, VFW, American
Legion, Eagles and Elks, all in Thief River
Falls.
He
enjoyed fishing in Buffalo Bay, Canada and spending
time with family and friends.
Leonard
is survived by a daughter, Patti (Joe) Folsom of
Hudson, Wisc.; five grandchildren; and two sisters,
Harriet (Hilding) Peterson of St. Paul and Marjorie
(Robert) of El Cajon, Calif.
He was
preceded in death by his parents; wives; a
daughter, Catherine in infancy; a son, John in
1995; and two brothers, Elmer and Ernie.
