James Helgeland, 55

Roseau - James "Jim" Helgeland, 55, formerly of Thief River Falls, died Saturday, March 3, 2001 in Kratka township of Pennington county.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday, March 7) at Bethany Lutheran Church, rural helgeland-color Thief River Falls with Rev. Bob Dahlen officiating. Casketbearers will be Keith Flaten, Ron Philipp, Alan Grand, Lee Sorensen, Todd Elmer and Mike Helgeland. Interment will be in Bethany Cemetery in Smiley township of Pennington county.

Visitation was held from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 6 with a 7 p.m. prayer service at Green Funeral Home in Thief River Falls. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to services at the church.

James Douglas Helgeland was born on May 22, 1945 in Thief River Falls, the son of Erwin and Beatrice "Betty" (Swanson) Helgeland. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church. He grew up in Smiley township and attended school in Thief River Falls, graduating from Lincoln High School in 1963. While attending school, Jim worked at Western Auto. He also worked for Detroiter Homes in Red Lake Falls and Home Lumber in Thief River Falls. He continued work as a journeyman for the pipeline in several locations until the early 1970's.

On September 21, 1976, Jim was united in marriage to Barb Nornes at Red Lake Falls. The couple made their home in Roseau. Jim worked at Marvin Windows in Warroad for nine years and for the past six years had been employed as parts manager at Sorensen Chevrolet in Roseau.

He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, football, gardening and spending time with friends and family, especially his grandchildren. Jim also did a lot of welding for area people.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara of Roseau; three sons, Paul Helgeland of Thief River Falls, Chad (Jana) Helgeland of Andover and Scott (Tiffany) Helgeland of Roseau; six grandchildren; a brother, Robert (Linda) Helgeland of Thief River Falls; a sister, Cindy (Roger) Hesse of Thief River Falls; and several aunts and other relatives.
