Thief
River Falls - Ray Haugen, 79, died Friday,
October 17, 2003 at the CNC Unit of Northwest
Medical Center, Thief River Falls.

Funeral
services will be held today, (Wednesday) at 11:00
a.m. at Calvary Lutheran Church, in St. Hilaire,
with Reverend Terri Cuppett officiating. Interment
will be at the Community Cemetery, St. Hilaire.
Casket bearers include : Ryan Haugen, Kim Peterson,
Patric Hanson, Aric Hanson, Kristi Lilja and Kelly
Bugge.
Oscar
"Ray" Raymond Haugen was born March 15, 1924, on
the family farm in River Falls Township, Pennington
County, the son of Oscar and Minnie (Johnson)
Haugen. In 1924, he was baptized into the Lutheran
faith in St. Hilaire and on July 18, 1937, he was
confirmed at St. Hilaire Lutheran Church. He grew
up in St. Hilaire and graduated from high school
there, where he played on the basketball
team.
On
March 25, 1945, Ray was united in marriage to
Gladys Hoaas at Salem Lutheran Church near Oklee.
They lived in Red Lake Falls, and operated the
Coast to Coast store. The couple lived for a short
time in Pasadena, Calif. and returned to the family
farm in River Falls Township in 1952. Gladys and
Raymond purchased a farm in Sanders Township near
St. Hilaire, where they lived until 1984. In 1984,
they moved to Skylite apartments, where Ray was the
caretaker. In 1986, they moved to Riverside Terrace
apartments. In January of 1994, Ray suffered a
stroke and moved to the CNC Unit of Northwest
Medical Center where he has since
resided.
Ray
was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church, St.
Hilaire, and a life member of the NRA. He worked as
a carpenter for Prichard Brothers for many years.
He worked on the missile silos in North Dakota. He
helped build many houses in the area as well as a
church in Grafton and helped build the pool at
Franklin Middle School in Thief River Falls. He
loved making things with his hands, since he was
very creative. He made cupboards, bunk beds, wooden
trucks and numerous items for his kids and
grandkids. He enjoyed deer hunting and cooking and
he was a very good cook.
He
is survived by a son, Gary (Marilyn) Haugen; a
daughter, Jackie (Mike) Olson of Thief River Falls;
son-in-law, Lyle Hanson of St. Hilaire; eight
grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brother,
Glen Haugen of Red Lake Falls, and many nieces and
nephews.
He
was preceded in death by wife, Gladys and one
daughter, Gwen Hanson, his parents and one brother,
