Irwin Haugen, 82

Newfolden - Erwin Haugen, 82, died Saturday, April 13, 2002 at Gettysburg Memorial Hospital in Gettysburg, S.D. Haugen obit

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today (Wednesday, April 17) at Westaker Free Lutheran Church in Newfolden with Rev. Philip Rokke officiating. Orpha Schaffhauser will be the organist, and special music will include a duet by Gary and Howard Hodne and a violin solo by Amber Ternet. Casketbearers will include Tom Filmore, Clifford Larson, Jay Garthus, Harold Maijala, Hilton Hjelle, and Larry Inman. Interment will be in Westaker Cemetery.

Visitation was held from 5 to 8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. prayer service on Tuesday, April 16, at Green Funeral Home in Thief River Falls. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to services at the church.

Irwin Herbert Haugen was born on February 5, 1920 in Marsh Grove Township of Marshall County, the son of Mathias and Emma (Strand) Haugen. He grew up in Marsh Grove Township where he attended Sunnyside Country School through the eighth grade. A World War II veteran, Erwin entered the U.S. Army on May 18, 1942 at Fort Snelling and served in the Philippines and received several overseas awards before being honorably discharged on November 28, 1945.

He returned to Marsh Grove where he married and farmed on the family homestead with his brothers. He also worked at the Coop Creamery in Thief River Falls until it closed. When he retired from farming in 1995, he was farming with his son, Steve. In 2000, Erwin moved with Steve and his family to Gettysburg, S.D. where he resided until the time of his death.

Survivors include a son, Steve (Jackie) Haugen of Gettysburg, S.D.; three daughters, Cynthia Dahl of Chaska and twins, Patricia Haugen of Staples and Victoria Ternet of Motley; a brother, Reuben Haugen of Newfolden; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Preceding Erwin in death were his parents; four brothers, Paul, Clarence, Garfield, and Robert; three sisters, Julia Westman, Alma Haugen, and Evellyn Brekkestrand; and two sisters-in-law.
