Odin Hanson, 97

Thief River Falls - Odin Hanson, 97, died Friday, May 3, 2002 at the CNC Unit of Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.

Funeral services were held at 11 Hanson obit a.m. on Monday, May 6, at Abundant Life Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls with Rev. Wesley Langaas officiating. Bev Kays was the organist, and special music was provided by the Grothe Family. Casketbearers were Paul Johnson, Mitchell Muzzy, Darrell Muzzy, Henry Aaby, Harold Hoff, Mark Aaby, Coby Walberg, and Allen Hanson. Interment was in Telemarken Cemetery in Kratka Township of Pennington County. Green Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Odin Clarence Hanson was born on May 20, 1904 at Ada, the son of Albert and Amelia (Aaby) Hanson. He was baptized at Wildrice Lutheran Church in Twin Valley and confirmed at Telemarken Lutheran Church, rural Thief River Falls, by Rev. Bjornson. He attended Kratka School, rural Thief River Falls, and the Northwest School of Agriculture in Crookston. Odin worked on farms in Hillsboro, N.D., Mayville, N.D., Nielsville, and Climax. He helped in the potato house, loading cars and handling sacks. During the winter, he helped his uncle, Julius Hanson.

On June 22, 1927, Odin was united in marriage to Manda Klemmetson at Mavie by Rev. E.O. Sabo. The couple farmed and raised purebred shorthorn beef cattle. In 1966, the couple received the Valley Farmer and Homemaker Award at the Red River Valley Winter Shows.

Odin was a member of Abundant Life Lutheran Church where he held various offices in the church. He also served on the Pennington County Board of Commissioners and Welfare board for 28 years and the Red River Valley Winter Shows Livestock board and Oakland Park Nursing Home board for 18 years. Other boards he served on included the Silverton Township board, Silverton school board, Farmers Co-op Grain and Seed board, Regional Planning Commission, a nine-county highway committee, and the first Soil Water Conservation District committee. He was a member of the Sons of Norway.

Survivors include two daughters, Violet (Lester) Muzzy and Marlene (Curtis) Johnson, both of Thief River Falls; a son, Clayton Hanson of Thief River Falls; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Preceding Odin in death were his wife, parents, and six brothers, William, Rudolph, Ingvald, Gerhart, Albin, and Oswald. A00003B2002MY08
