Martin Hanson, 86

Thief River Falls - Martin Hanson, 86, died Tuesday, February 6, 2001 at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 10 at Evangelical Free Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls with Rev. Jim Howard officiating. Dr. Kevin Meyer spoke for the family, and Leonard Furuseth shared army life reflections. Jan Lee was the organist, and Ingrid Hanson presented a piano selection. Vocalists included Glenda Olson and John Flom.

Casketbearers were Ehren Hanson, Seth Hanson, Ingrid Hanson, Kjell Hanson, Brendt Hanson, Timothy Hanson, Kirsten Hanson, Kelsey Meyer and Kenzie Meyer. Burial was in Silverton Lutheran Cemetery in Silverton township of Pennington county. Green Funeral Home of Thief River Falls was in charge of the arrangements.

Martin Hanson was born on July 29, 1914 in Silverton township of Pennington county, the son of Syvert and Mable (Berg) Hanson. He was baptized and confirmed at Silverton Lutheran Church. He attended a country school and graduated from the Northwest School of Agriculture in Crookston. He and his father operated Glenview Dairy, delivering milk and cream to customers in the Thief River Falls area.

In May of 1942, Martin entered the United States Army at Fort Snelling. He trained in Colorado for the Norwegian ski patrol and later served in Norway, Normandy, northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns. He was honorably discharged in November of 1945.

On June 6, 1948, Martin was united in marriage to Alice Wold. The couple farmed the family dairy and grain farm in Silverton township. Martin and Alice moved closer to town in 1983, and he continued to work on the farm with his son, Mark, until December of 1999.

Martin was a member of Evangelical Free Church.

He enjoyed visiting with friends and family, especially his grandchildren, and during the last few years, enjoyed the fellowship of a men's Bible study and prayer group.

Martin is survived by his wife; two sons, Mark (Audrey) of Thief River Falls and Gary (Sherril) of Troutman, N.C.; a daughter, Grace (Kevin) Meyer of Independence; nine grandchildren; a brother, Silas (Marjorie) Hanson of Thief River Falls; three sisters-in-law; and a brother-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Wilhelm; and a sister, Elfie. A00003B2000FB14
