Plummer - Harold G. Hanson, 81, died Saturday, March 9, 2002 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in Red Lake Falls.

Linda Olson was the organist, and the vocalists were Greg Knoll and Julie Westcott. Casketbearers were Jim Davis, Robert Newland, Roy Newland, Norman Newland, Dan Newland, Art Hanson, Greg Knoll, and Brian Laymon. Interment was in Emardville Cemetery with Green Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Harold G. Hanson was born on October 11, 1920 in Swift Current, Sask., Canada, the son of Henry and Thea (Vettleson) Hanson. Shortly after he was born, the family moved to Pennington County where they farmed. Harold attended a country school in District 3 near the Red Lake Indian Reservation. In addition to working on the family farm, he worked for other area farmers.

In 1942, Harold was drafted into the U.S. Army. After attending basic training in Little Rock, Ark., he was stationed in Virginia and Washington State before going overseas for wartime duty. He served as a medic, washing clothes, in Okinawa. He was sent to Korea before receiving orders to return to the United States. After serving for more than 3-1/2 years, Harold returned to Minnesota in 1946 and farmed with his father on a farm they purchased near Plummer.

After several years, Harold went to Minneapolis where he worked construction and met his future wife, Helen Herranen. After their marriage on September 30, 1961, Harold adopted Helen's daughter, Sandra. While in the Twin Cities, the couple managed two apartment buildings. In 1970, they moved to a farm in Plummer. From 1981 to 1984, they managed a large apartment complex in New Hope, and then moved to Plummer to enjoy retirement.

Harold was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, the Plummer American Legion, and the Thief River Falls VFW Post.

He enjoyed marriage, being a grandfather and great-grandfather, driving, playing cards, bingo, gardening, deer hunting and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include his daughter, Sandra (Jim) Davis of Eden Prairie; two granddaughters; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Arthur (Alma) of Plummer; three sisters, Ann Newland of Thief River Falls, and Betty (Frank) Knoll and JoAnn (Maynard) Laymon, both of Warren; a brother-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
