Plummer
- Harold G. Hanson, 81, died Saturday, March 9,
2002 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in Red Lake
Falls.
Funeral
services were held at 11
a.m.
on Tues-day, March 12, at Immanuel Lutheran Church
in Plummer with Rev. Frank Ehling officiating.
Linda Olson was the organist, and the vocalists
were Greg Knoll and Julie Westcott. Casketbearers
were Jim Davis, Robert Newland, Roy Newland, Norman
Newland, Dan Newland, Art Hanson, Greg Knoll, and
Brian Laymon. Interment was in Emardville Cemetery
with Green Funeral Home in charge of the
arrangements.
Harold
G. Hanson was born on October 11, 1920 in Swift
Current, Sask., Canada, the son of Henry and Thea
(Vettleson) Hanson. Shortly after he was born, the
family moved to Pennington County where they
farmed. Harold attended a country school in
District 3 near the Red Lake Indian Reservation. In
addition to working on the family farm, he worked
for other area farmers.
In
1942, Harold was drafted into the U.S. Army. After
attending basic training in Little Rock, Ark., he
was stationed in Virginia and Washington State
before going overseas for wartime duty. He served
as a medic, washing clothes, in Okinawa. He was
sent to Korea before receiving orders to return to
the United States. After serving for more than
3-1/2 years, Harold returned to Minnesota in 1946
and farmed with his father on a farm they purchased
near Plummer.
After
several years, Harold went to Minneapolis where he
worked construction and met his future wife, Helen
Herranen. After their marriage on September 30,
1961, Harold adopted Helen's daughter, Sandra.
While in the Twin Cities, the couple managed two
apartment buildings. In 1970, they moved to a farm
in Plummer. From 1981 to 1984, they managed a large
apartment complex in New Hope, and then moved to
Plummer to enjoy retirement.
Harold
was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, the
Plummer American Legion, and the Thief River Falls
VFW Post.
He
enjoyed marriage, being a grandfather and
great-grandfather, driving, playing cards, bingo,
gardening, deer hunting and spending time with
family and friends.
Survivors
include his daughter, Sandra (Jim) Davis of Eden
Prairie; two granddaughters; two
great-grandchildren; a brother, Arthur (Alma) of
Plummer; three sisters, Ann Newland of Thief River
Falls, and Betty (Frank) Knoll and JoAnn (Maynard)
Laymon, both of Warren; a brother-in-law; and many
nieces and nephews.
Harold
was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters,
Alice Hanson and Ardith Zimpel; a brother,
Clarence; and a brother-in-law.
