John Hamberg, 85

Strathcona - John W. Hamberg, 85, died Thursday, May 17, 2001 at the CN & C Unit of Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 22, at Gustav Adolph Lutheran Church in Strathcona with Rev. John Jorgensen officiating. Lois Peterson was the pianist, and the soloist was Carol Coltom. Casketbearers were Roy Nelson, Verne Nelson, Ralph Gaarde, Gene Connelly, Tommy Hanson and Harvey Hanson. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery in Strathcona with Collins Funeral Home of Middle River in charge of the arrangements.

John Walter Hamberg was born on September 29, 1915 in Huss township of Roseau county near Strathcona, the son of Zakarias and Nikolina (Nelson) Hamberg. He grew up and attended school in Huss township and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He worked for area farmers for a number of years and later as a lumberjack. In the late 1940s, Johnny moved to Scobey, Mont. where he did farm work. He returned to Strathcona and was employed in road construction for several years. He also worked at Arctic Enterprises for about 10 years prior to retirement. In August of 2000, he moved to Valley Home in Thief River Falls and for the past two weeks had been a resident of the CN &C Unit of Northwest Medical Center.

He was a long-time member of Gustav Adolph Lutheran Church of Strathcona where he served as custodian. He also served on the Strathcona City Council for 25 years.

Johnny enjoyed saw sharpening, mechanics and especially attending auction sales and visiting with his friends.

Survivors include a sister-in-law and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

John was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Alfred, Zak, Nels and Bill; and four sisters, Ann, Irma, Mae and Rosa in infancy. A00003B2000MY23
