Thief
River Falls - Saima Halme, 89, died on Monday,
March 31, 2003 at Northwest Medical Center in Thief
River Falls.
Funeral
services were held on Monday, April 7 at Redeemer
Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls with the Rev.
Karin Moberg officiating. Joyce Halbasch was the
organist. Lois Anderson and Vanessa Martell were
soloists. Casketbearers were Darren Bakke, Kevin
Halme, Wallace Waltonen, David Thompson, Joe Gallo
and Charles Waltonen. Interment was in the Finnish
Cemetery in Middle River.
Saima
Esther Waltonen was born on February 7, 1914, the
daughter of Charles and Amanda (Ojala) Waltonen, in
Middle River. She was baptized and confirmed at the
Finnish Lutheran Church. She graduated from Middle
River High School.
On
October 28, 1937, Saima was united in marriage to
Frank Halme in Middle River. She was a member of
First Lutheran Church in Middle River and later,
became a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in
Thief River Falls. She was active in the Redeemer
Women's groups and the quilting circle. She worked
as a sorority mother at UND, Tri Delta House and
later, was an employee at Ekeren Drug. While living
at Valley Home in Thief River Falls, she was an
avid quilter, where she spent many hours quilting
and making beautiful needlework for her family. She
enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchidren
and made afghans for all of them.
Survivors
include her son, F. William "Billy" (Carol) of
Middle River; daughter, Julie Bakke of Thief River
Falls; four grandchildren; seven
great-grandchildren; sisters, Taina Hicks of Ft.
Belvoir, Va., and Ruth Affolter of Bellevue, Wash.;
three sisters-in-law; and several nieces and
nephews.
Saima was
preceded in death by her husband, Frank; a
great-granddaughter; her parents; and brothers,
Waino Walton, John Waltonen, Wesley Waltonen and
Henry "Hank" Walton. A00003B2003AR09
