Rose Gust, 95

Greenbush &endash; Rose Helen Gust, 95, died Feb. 11, 2003 at the Greenbush Nursing Home in Greenbush.

Rose Helen Gust was born the Rose Gust daughter of Elizabeth (Vanyo) and Anton Homolka, on Sept. 15, 1907 at their home near Grass Lake School in Poplar Grove Township in Roseau County. Rose attended Grass Lake School through the eighth grade. She later lived on what was called the Homolka Hill where her parents had a dance hall, saw mill, ran the post office, had a threshing rig and a flour mill. On June 27, 1928 she married Max Gust at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Benwood. They lived in Racine, Wisc., for a few years where Max worked for Nash Auto Co. and Rose also worked. In 1929, they bought a farm in Poplar Grove Township and they operated a dairy farm all through the years, in addition to raising crops and hay. She enjoyed gardening, keeping her house clean, cooking, canning, baking, crocheting, quilting and playing cards. She was an active member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Benwood.

Rose is survived by six children: Harry of Greenbush, Max Jr. "Bud" of Strathcona, Joe (Joy) of Strathcona, Betty (Dallas) Erickson of Greenbush, Tony (Marcella) of Strathcona, and Dorothy Pesch of Grand Forks; 17 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Max in 1991; an infant son; six sisters; four brothers, and son-in-law, Marvin Kaste.

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Benwood with Father Don Braukman officiating. Interment was at Gust National Cemetery.
