Merle A. Gunnarson, 72

Lake Bronson - Merle A. Gunnarson, 72, Lake Bronson, died Wednesday, March 14, at home.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 19, at Zion Lutheran Church, Lake Bronson, with Pastor Mitch Tolpingrud officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Lake Bronson. Arrangements were with Collins Funeral Homes of Karlstad.

Merle Alvord Gunnarson, the son of the late Albert and Myrtle (Lundberg) Gunnarson, was born on December 31, 1928, in Jupiter township, Kittson county. He was baptized at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lake Bronson and attended country school in Jupiter township and Lake Bronson High school. On September 29, 1951, Merle was united in marriage to Verna Wright at Warroad. They resided in Arveson township north of Karlstad where they raised cattle, and in 1968, they bought their present farm in Deerwood township where they have made their home for the past 33 years. Merle had a variety of jobs over the years, including hauling pulpwood and gravel, over the road trucking, and working for several area farmers while managing his own farm. He especially enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was an avid gardener and shared his love of flowers with everyone. Merle and Verna enjoyed traveling, especially to Arizona where they had spent the past several winters.

Merle is survived by his wife, Verna; sons: Larry of Halma, and LaMar (Kay), of Nisswa; daughters: Connie, Mrs. Kevin Swenson, and Cathy, Mrs. Kevin Waller, both of Hallock; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; step-mother: Pearl Gunnarson, Rockford, Ill.; brothers: Dale (Marilyn), Dallas, Texas, and Donald (Norma), Lakewood, Colo.; sisters: Ida, Mrs. Lawrence Heuchert, Grand Forks, N.D., and Darlene, Mrs. Lynn Zaugg, Rockford, Ill.; foster sister: Bernice, Mrs. David Ward, Glyndon; sister-in-law: Shirley Gunnarson, Lake Bronson; in addition to many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother: Wallace, and two nephews.
