Clarence Gulseth, 89

Blackduck -- Clarence (Goose) Gulseth, 89, Blackduck, died Tuesday, August 14, 2001, at Greensview Health Care Center in Bagley. Services were held on Friday, August 17, at Zion Lutheran Church in Blackduck. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Blackduck.

Clarence Gulseth was born September 9, 1911 in Grygla to Andrew and Anna Gulseth. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He attended school and graduated in Thief River Falls.

He started working for L.B. Hartz Co. when he was 20 and was manager of the billing department of the warehouse for 14 years.

He was married to Agnes Olson in 1937 in Thief River Falls. They had two children, Pat and Larry. They moved to Blackduck in 1947 where he and Al Jaranson bought the Hartz and Gamble store. They later desolved their partnership and Clarence became the sole owner of the Hartz store. In 1966 he formed Gulseth, Inc., with Larry Gulseth, Keith Anderson and Carl Kubiak. Clarence retired in 1985. His wife Agnes passed away in 1970, and in 1972 he married Esther Page in Hines.

Clarence was a member of Zion Lutheran Church for over 50 years in Blackduck, and served the church and congregation in several church offices. He was a charter member of the Blackduck Development Corp., a member of the Civic and Commerce, the Blackduck Golf Course, and served on the Blackduck school board for 14 years. He was a member of the Blackduck of Minnesota Food Retailers, the Elks Lodge, Masons, and was a Shriner.

Between 1978 and 1999 he spent winters in Mission, Tex. He was an avid wood carver, and was a member of Rio Grande Wood Carvers of McAllen, Tex.

Clarence is survived by his wife Esther, one son, Larry Gulseth of Baudette, one daughter, Pat, Mrs. Carl Kubiak of Bagley, five grandchildren, three great grandchildren, one stepdaughter, one stepson, seven step grandchildren, and one sister, Ardith Jaronson of Bemidji.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Clarence and Arthur, and three sisters, Ida, Stella and Doris.
