John Gullingsrud, 71

Bismarck, N.D. - John Gullingsrud, 71, died Monday, October 8, 2001 at his home in Bismarck, N.D.

Services were held on Thursday, October 11, at 1 p.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Bismarck with Rev. Jeff Tengesdal officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery with military rites by VFW Post 1326. Eastgate Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.

John Gullingsrud was born on May 12, 1930 in Thief River Falls, the son of John and Maymie (Anderson) Gullingsrud. He graduated from Lincoln High School where he played football. John was a member of the National Guard and served in the Korean War from 1951 to 1952. Following his discharge, he lived in California where he worked for the railroad and played semi-professional hockey in Los Angeles. He returned to Thief River Falls and began working for Benson Optical.

In 1954, John married Harriet Overboe, and the couple moved to Marshalltown, Iowa where he managed a Benson Optical branch. In 1963, they moved to Minneapolis, and John worked at the company headquarters. In 1965, he was transferred to Bismarck where he worked for Benson Optical and also for Drs. Springan and Springan and Snyder Distributing of Fargo.

John was president of the Marshalltown (Iowa) Kiwanis, lifetime member of the Elks and member of the VFW and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church where he sang in the choir for several years.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his granddaughters.

John is survived by his wife, Harriet; a son Bruce (special friend Penny Borg of Bismarck) of Vancouver, Wash.; two granddaughters; a brother, Don (Emmy) Gullingsrud of Orlando, Fla.; three sisters, Carlyn Stadum of Fergus Falls, Helen (Pete) Barstad of Harvey, N.D. and Marilyn (Dave) Padbreger of Kempner, Texas; a half-brother, Dan Nelson of Salem, Ore.; and many nieces and nephews.

He as preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother and three half-brothers and sisters. A00003B2001OC17
