Palmer J. Grovum, 89

Gilbert - Palmer J. Grovum, 89, died Friday, March 23, 2001 at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth.

A memorial service was held at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 26, at Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert with Rev. Francis Paquette officiating. Military honors were accorded by George and Mark Klobuchar VFW Post 4456 of Gilbert. Interment will be at a later date.

Palmer J. Grovum was born on March 29, 1911 in Grygla, the son of Ole and Tilda (Rue) Grovum. He attended grade school and farmed at Grygla before entering the Army during World War II. He served as a sergeant in the 57th Signal Battalion Communications System in the European Theater. After his discharge in 1945, he went to G.I. Electrical School to become an electrician.

On December 11, 1946, Palmer married Marie J. Leigh at Grygla. He worked on various construction jobs before becoming the Superintendent of Water and Lights for the cities of Gilbert and Sparta from 1955 to 1965. He then went back to electrical construction, working at the missile sites in North Dakota and mining plants on the Iron Range until his retirement in 1977.

Palmer was a member of Electrical Local 1426 of Grand Forks, N.D., George and Mark Klobuchar VFW Post 4456 of Gilby and Pratt-Volden-Mickelson-Anderson American Legion Post 239 of Virginia.

He enjoyed country music and dancing and was an avid outdoorsmen, enjoying deer hunting season.

Survivors include his wife, Marie; two sons, Larry (Debra) of Brooklyn Park and Lowell (Irma) of Gilbert; two daughters, Darlene (David) Cass of Gilmore, Texas and Connie (Jim) Bombenger of Hinckley; six grandchildren; three great-grandsons; a brother, Obert (Evelyn) Grovum of Thief River Falls; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Palmer was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and seven brothers.
