Thief River Falls - Obert Grovum, 94, formerly of Grygla, died on Monday, April 7, 2003 at Oakland Park Nursing Home in Thief River Falls.

Funeral services were held on Friday, April 11 at St. Petri Lutheran Church in Grygla with the Rev. Joseph Abrahamson officiating. Tammy Sparby was the organist and special music was provided by Kathy Kainz, Judy Dupree and Mike Lehrer. Casketbearers were Larry Grovum, Larry Vigen, LeRoy Vigen, Danny Haack, Donald Haack and Jim Holte. Interment was in St. Petri Lutheran Cemetery in Valley Township of Marshall County.

Obert Grovum was born on August 20, 1907, the son of Ole and Tilda (Rue) Grovum, in Eckvold Township of Marshall County. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Petri Lutheran Church. He grew up and attended Eckvold Township School. Obert worked for the Red River Dairy, using a horse and cart to deliver milk in glass bottles. He was also employed in the mines on the Iron Range.

On October 22, 1932, he married Evelyn Wold in Thief River Falls. The couple made their home in Grygla until 1968, and then moved to Mavie. In 1998, they moved to Thief River Falls. He was a life long farmer. Obert resided at the CNC Unit of Northwest Medical Center for six months and then entered Oakland Park Nursing Home for two years. He was a member of St. Petri Lutheran Church and its council. He also held membership in the Farmers Union and served on the Valley Township Board. He liked to garden and enjoyed ice fishing. He especially enjoyed family gatherings.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn; son, David (Elaine) of Thief River Falls; and several nieces and nephews.

Obert was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Julia Steenerson; seven brothers, Tom, Gilmer, Alec, Henry, Jorgen and Palmer in infancy; and nephews and nieces. A00003B2003AR16
